Film Raja Harishchandra (1913) by Dadasaheb Phalke was a silent film's first big screen production of India. In the 1930s, the film industry in India produces more than 200 movie titles per year. India has a vast market for silent films and musicals, so the Bollywood and regional film industry in India rollicking start producing sound films.
India was in turmoil throughout the 1930s and 1940s, including the effect of the Great Depression, World War II, and the Indian Independence Movement, and the separation of India. Most of the Bollywood film produced as a form of escapism, just to escape from reality. After great success with Ara Alam, Ardeshir Irani made Kisan Kanya which is the first color film in Hindi. The next year, Irani made another color film titled Mother India. However, color film has not become popular until the late 1950s. Melodrama and the romantic musical film has been dominated since the beginning of the history of Indian films.
